hi there...its nice to know also that the very conservative province had been and is a beauty connoisseur. i visted bohol long time ago and my impression was...its conservative but now....kinda kewl and updated in terms of beauty pageant (no offense). The agenda is recycled and wasted beauty....let me give you a certain point how to avoid such.....here in our province..the negros occidental, we have this yearly panaad sa negros festival and one highlight is lin-ay sang negros (Miss Negros)...one requirement is that all contestant being endorsed by each LGU must havent joined the Any major beauty pageant both national and Local (Negros). She must be the winner of the LGU ebauty pageant...so in the Local level, it must be stipulated in the r equirements to avoid recycled beauties to join the contest also both local and provincial. Third, the provincial organizer must coordinate with the LGU organizer of beauty pageant on this manner.....its okey if ever one contestant from another LGU will represents other LGU provided they must come from Bohol...it can be traced up anyway....got yah? But any way Congratulations to the organizer....havent gone back to bohol anymore

ey.. First of all I would like to congratulate Rhiz Nova for winning this year's Miss Bohol Sandugo. You deserve it girl!! and reading her comments down here, reminds me a lot of my experience in this pageant. Last year I competed as Miss Alona Tropical Panglao, where I landed as first runner-up. It was such a memorable and remarkable experience since it was my first time to compete in a beauty pageant. I was still 16 then and I thought that it would be just like playin' around and that it would be easy. But it wasn't! The screening alone makes me wanna go home. But I guess that was because it was my first time. The sponsor visits, pictorials and the tour we had for the pageant are the most memorable ones. But the pageant night is the most challenging part. I never expected that I would be included in the top 3, knowin' that I'm the youngest of all the 13 candidates. And eventhough I wasn't able to bring home the crown, I still felt like a winner seeing my fellow Panglaoanons supporting me all the way and the friendship I cultivated from the rest of the candidates of Miss Bohol Sandugo 2003. Living in Cebu City for 17 years was never a hindrance for me to join the pageant. I'm proud to say that I am a Boholana! after all I was born in Bohol's tourism crown jewel, Panglao, and eventhough the pageant's over, I can still feel the Sandugo spirit within me. The beauty of nature, rich culture and the friendly people we have are just some of the evidences why a lot of people across the globe wanted to come and visit our province Bohol. So now, I would like to invite all Boholanos from the different parts of the universe to be one with us in placing Bohol on the map as the most prominent, the capital and the no. 1 tourist destination not only here in the Philippines but also in the whole world!

Being crowned Ms Bohol Sandugo 2004 is one of the best things that ever happened to me and perhaps my greatest achievement in life. I was not born and raised in Bohol but a big part of me, loves this beautiful island. I take pride in the fact that I have boholano roots. When I joined, I did not expect to win the coveted title. I wanted to represent our town, my mom's hometown, because I wanted to inspire the people and do my share for the Sandugo celebration. I did hope to be able to make a difference for our province and leave a legacy worth emulating to the young men and women of Bohol. The night I was chosen Ms Bohol Sandugo was pure bliss! It's such an overwhelming feeling...at that time, I thought of all my accomplishments in life and realized that this is the most splendid one. Something that compensates for the lack of all the others! Having read the comments of our kababayans, im very happy to know that we share the same strong conviction for being Boholano. I want to thank all of you for believing in us, for lifting our spirits to carry on this celebration of life, beauty and womanhood... I wish to acknowledge the people behind the Sandugo festival, who strived to make the event a success despite the time constraint in the preparations. This year's Sandugo was a test of will and leadership, character and dedication!and im proud to say we all went through it with admirable spirit... I would also like to share my triumph with the Ms Bohol Sandugo 2004 candidates! To all the 21 splendidly beautiful young women whom I spent precious moments with! Thank you for sharing with me the gift of your being... to the people behind the pageant who worked night and day, who were there during our highs and lows... to my mother, the most loyal Boholano I've known, who inculcated in me this great love for Bohol. I want to thank her for molding me into what I am now. A woman who exudes beauty and confidence that steams from within! To my family and the people of Inabanga, for all the support... and to you! For being who you are, for being a wonderful Boholano... after the Sandugo, life was never the same for me, and I do love the change! I don't mind the fame because it is but fleeting... what I dream now is for all of us to be united and share the common goal of showing to the whole world that our Bohol is a sparkling gem in the fascinating treasures of the Phil Islands... we are the living proof of that among other things. So, need I say more? Let us dare to dream and believe that we can make it a reality... I love you all!

Hi Rhiz, congratulations from the webmaster, and thank you for sharing your story with us!--Jeroen.

from Bohol Sunday Post issue last July 25, 2004 which appeared on the Inabanga Page. Arenas: The crowd’s favorite By LEO P. UDTOHAN YEAR after year, pageant enthusiasts have religiously followed the Miss Bohol Sandugo, primarily to find out homegrown Boholana who will win the crown. For everything else, expectations were not as high since most of us have already jaded thoughts about the ordinariness or mediocrity of past editions. Crowned last Saturday night, July 17 was Rhiz Novah Arenas from Inabanga town as Miss Bohol Sandugo. A 19-year-old Psychology student from San Carlos University, she was the crowd favorite, both in her hometown and the province. Arenas had already a title as the reigning Miss Ubi Queen crowned last Jan. On the night of the pageant, Arenas got the crowd’s attention when she said, “Basta taga- Bohol mga guwapa, basta mga guwapa taga-Bohol.” She was not the first chosen among the five finalists as well as no t the last to be called for the final round, but through the end she overcame her feelings of self-doubt. Splendid in her gown and even more captivating as she answered the questions graciously and intelligently, she was crowned Miss Bohol Sandugo. Her most immediate concern to promote the province of Bohol once she has the crown is to use any available means like the Internet to promote Bohol to the rest of the world. Now that she is queen, let us hope she will carry on the spirit of this vision. The stunning beauties who won the princess titles were Kathy Lynn Atuel from Ubay, Cheryl Amormarie Eastman who represented Calape, Richelle Anne Guibone from Panglao and Marian Licayan from Duero.

Until now I still have a fervent desire to follow up on the happenings of Bohol and their beauty pageants - and I love it!! Im reading all about the controversies - and being an expert of such ( which I experienced in 2002 for being australian born) all I can say is that the bottom line is that - whatever degree of Boholana heritage they have, we should be grateful, proud and mesmerised by each candidate showcasing their internal and external beauty - as they represent being Boholana and that's the essence of it all.... GREAT JOB to the organisers and contestants - looking at the pictures makes me wanna fly back to Bohol right now!!! much love and more power to ya'll missin u here in Australia - just wait ill be back luv Elle (2nd runner up 2002.

But she is not excluded in the controversy: her residency. She was not born and raised in Inabanga although her mom is from that town.

TO THE WEBMASTER OF WWW.BOHOLSANDUGO.COM This is my opinion and the www.bohol.ph is not included. Now, the website is updated. Very poor layout, very poor quality pictures. I am expecting a beautiful Miss Bohol Sandugo presentation!!! And I have to question why the webmaster of the www.boholsandugo.com can allow one email address to vote? It takes time, maybe you think people will cheat during voting! You will tell us people here in US that Boholanos are not to be trusted in this way. I would like to question that why we can't post messages of supports to the website like here in www.bohol.ph. Webmaster of www.boholsandugo.com, wake up! You are left behind already of a good internet promotion. You are such very traditional! You are not smart. You make the US people frustrated why we can't post messages. If you will create one, IT IS NOW TOO LATE.

Hmmm. I don't think the Bohol Sandugo website has a poor layout, and pictures of the current candidates are all there, so I don't feel the need to duplicate that effort. One vote per email address is restrictive on one hand, but people with their own domain name can vote as often as they like. Doing this right is really difficult. A feedback feature is nice, but requires constant monitoring: I am now removing inappropriate feedback almost daily, and I can understand not every webmaster is ready to deal with that.--Jeroen.

Candidates looks familiar, are you sure these are the candidates for this year's Miss Bohol Sandugo? yeah, I forgot these beauties are recycled as you said. but, if there are 22 official candidates (xcluding miss baclayon) how calm there are only 21 ladies in that picture above? even the profiles of each of the candidates are not posted...I was expecting to see and at least know even just a little of these beauties...is it because most the candidates are recycled that's why there's no need to post their profile expecting that people had kept them in their heart? I think this is one big mistake. (Sionyd, Canada)

You can not rely to the www.boholsandugo.com website or the official website of the Bohol sandugo. It is not updated no pictures, old news articles...! and very poor layout. Shame!

Why Miss Baclayon has to back-out? She is really beautiful and I am sure she can make it to the magic 3.

They are very nice and beautiful ladies. Gimingaw na intawon mi diri sa US moanha sa Bohol. Wala may TBTK karun nga year, so sa internet nalang mi motan-aw. I have a little correction, Miss HNU is Ms. Rhea Echavez and not Guibone. Guibone had joined the contest but just a runner-up. I admire also the writer tungod kay iya jud gi-research ang mga previous winner maskin there is no record. Hala, goodluck nalang sa mga kandidata! Ipakita nga mga guapa jud tang taga-Bohol!

Hi guys I just pasted this article here so that many readers can view this. TY

Miss Bohol Sandugo search on Sat

By LEO P. UDTOHAN

FROM the pigeonhole: Who among the 22 lovely candidates will make it to the magic four?

One July 17, another homegrown beauty will wear the Sandugo crown, to be passed on to her by last year’s winner Fatima Liora Lloren Rana.

The final circle of beauties embarked on a tour of the pageant sponsors’ establishments and courtesy calls, including a stop at some Bohol’s tourist spots. The talent night competition was held on July 10 at the Island City Mall.

MISS Bohol Sandugo takes pride in its tradition of being one of the pageants many Boholanos, men and women alike, look forward to witnessing yearly where it is being staged.

The search for Miss Bohol Sandugo started in 1989 with Elizabeth Mumar Añana winning the crown. Since then, the yearly quest has become the biggest, most awaited local beauty event with hundreds of aspirants from the province. As rigid screening and final selection go on, the best of the lot, the perfect representative of the Boholana is chosen.

The three-hour program will begin with a parade of the contestants. The swimsuit and long gown competitions, as well as the interview portion, will follow. From 22 candidates, only one deserving girl will become Miss Bohol Sandugo on the grand coronation night held at the Bohol Wisdom School gym, 8 p.m.

Feedback

The Post’s recent item on Miss Bohol Sandugo drew a lot of reactions. Reader Precillano Echavia of Maribojoc town called the writer (from landline to mobile phone for 14: 69) to give his feedback. Echavia, who is married, was a teacher at Holy Name University before he moved to UCPB.

He said, “Miss HNU and Miss Young Maribojoc is not Guibone (who represented Panglao) and it is Rhea Echavez.”

The Miss HNU and Miss Young Maribojoc titles were inadvertently placed on Guibone instead of Echavez due to computer “confusion.” The article was the one initially printed but her name wasn’t removed when the article was replaced with the right one.

To upbeat note and tick off the beauties: Miss Bohol Sandugo 1996 Laianne Reyes Canoy from Maribojoc is now connected with PCI bank in Cebu. Gemma Manding (not Gemma Mandin) was crowned Miss Bohol in 1986. Miss Tagbilaran Lorraine Marie Evasco had joined Miss Maribojoc in 2003 and not even land in magic three. Her father is from Maribojoc.

The beauty pageant in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s was named Miss Bohol for the fiesta island celebration and was under the administration of several governors: Juan Pajo, Esteban Bernido, Lino Chatto, Rolando Butalid. In the 1980s the governors then were Victor de la Serna (OIC), Constancio Torralba, et al.

The MBS 2004 pageant chairs are Wilfilda (not Wilfreda) Collins of the Garcia chains of Pawnshops and Geesnell Yap of Bohol Tropics.

National pageants

Other readers and Internet enthusiasts who log on at www.bohol.ph also gave their feedback. Others are sending the Bb. Pilipinas and Mutya ng Pilipinas official results that “there were Miss Bohol winners who competed the pageants.”

“Cherry Mae Bacarro competed for the Bb. Pilipinas 2003 pageant last March 15, 2003 at the Araneta Coliseum. The Mabuhay Beauties said that ‘Candidate N0. 3 – CHERRY MAE BACARRO. Is a lady maybe missed the cut by very little, because there was nothing weak about her performance onstage at all. In fact, I think she should replace one of the weaker semifinalists. She could probably make a strong impact in another year and be a semifinals shoo-in at least.’

“MBS Irah Noemi Naron also competed for the Mutya ng Pilipinas. ”

Bb. Pilipinas 1979

It was also Mr. Echavia who called the Post’s attention to this interesting information of the Bb. Pilipinas 1979 first runner-up Perla Fernando Salig who is a Boholana. The Post was able to secure a document from Mabuhay Beauties, an international organization which records and compiles events---and confirmed that, indeed, Salig was the first runner-up in the Bb. Pilipinas 1979 pageant.

The local record shows that she was not a Miss Bohol titleholder; however, she is a true blue Boholana who made a name in a national pageant. Perla Fernando Salig became Miss Loboc Academy and Miss Commerce at Divine Word College now Holy Name University. She won the Mutya ng Bohol pageant in Cebu sponsored by the Circulo Boholano de Cebu in 1998. She represented the Central Visayas to the 1979 Bb. Pilipinas.

Manila girls who have the “standards” could not outshine the Boholana beauty. Salig, who was fresh, simple with an epitome of an untouched “probinsyana,” still made it to the 15 semi-finalists out of the 37 official candidates from different parts of the country.

The final question (Supposed you are reading a book and you don’t like the content, and the author is at your back. What are you going to do?) was a tough one compared to the questions thrown to other finalists. Salig was proclaimed first runner-up and was also voted as one of the five Lux ladies. The winners were Criselda Flores Cecilio (Bb. Pilipinas-Universe), Mimilanie “Melanie” Laurel Marquez (Bb. Pilipinas-International), Maria Theresa Carlson (Miss Young Pilipinas) and Princess Ava Quibranza (Miss Maja Pilipinas).

Previous winners of the Bb. Pilipinas pageants have become celebrities. Its two most famous winners to date are Gloria Diaz and Margie Moran-Florendo, who were both crowned Miss Universe. However, since Florendo won in 1973, the Miss Universe crown has eluded the Philippines. Miriam Quiambao, now a TV personality, was first runner-up during the 1999 Miss Universe pageant. Yet, Salig declined the illuminating offers from Manila that promised her to become an actress and model. Still young and vibrant, Salig is married to Danny Teves with whom she has four sons. She runs a boutique business here in Bohol and Cebu.

REMEMBER WHEN? So far, there is only one Boholana who made it to the Bb. Pilipinas and was proclaimed first runner-up. The former Perla Fernando Salig (now Teves) was the picture of poise and confidence. Will another Boholana follow the same feat? The early favorites of the Miss Bohol Sandugo 2004 are Miss Inabanga, Rhiz Nova Arenas, and Miss Ubay, Kathy Lynn Atuel.

There was a news item about a certain Boholana who was Miss Bohol in 1979 who was first runner-up of the Bb. Pilipinas 1979 competition.

I hope Mr. Leo Udtohan can research and write about her. It is truly a prestige to Bohol and the people that our beauty never left out in the national competition.
