Antequera is an interior town located 19 kilometers from Tagbilaran City and lying northeast of Maribojoc.
Antequera used to be a barrio of Maribojoc, known as Agad, meaning 'hope'. In 1876, Agad, together with some barangays of Cortes was made into a municipality. At that time, it was named after the birthplace a high Spanish official, Antequera, a city in Spain. Simeon Villas, one of the early settlers of the place became its first gobernadorcillo (as the mayor was called in Spanish time).
Antequera is well known for its native basketware. Every Sunday morning (make sure to arrive before noon), you can visit the market of native products.
After your visit to the market, it is a small walk down to the Mag-Aso falls for a refreshing dip in one of Bohol's famous falls. Be aware though, that in the rainy season, the normally peaceful stream can become quite rough.
The town is further known for its many caves. Some of these caves can only be accessed if you bring scuba diving gear. Interested people can read this article by Doc Amores.

My last visit was on April 13-19 2014, that was Holy Week I was so sad seeing all the devastation the last last earthquake left.i can only shed tears to the church which i used to hear mass during my childhood and high school days and some other old buildings destroyed i.e. the new municipal-hall, market place and some residential structures, etc. |
