One thinks of Bohol and their thoughts will usually include an image of the Chocolate Hills and the Loboc River. Bohol is perhaps the number one tourist and business destination in the Philippines, where you find the beautiful white sandy beaches in Panglao Bohol, and some great restaurants and clubs in the famous resorts. A tour of Baclayon Church, the oldest stone Church in the Philippines and many more. Bohol is the home province of the past president of the Republic of the Philippines, the late Pres. Carlos P. Garcia from Talibon located in the interior part of Bohol. Folks, I came from Tagbilaran City, the capital City of Bohol, known to be the friendship City of the Philippines now residing in Hawaii for 23 years but I tried to go home every year because there is no place like Bohol. The people are very friendly and hospitable. The beautiful beaches in Panglao, the water and winds entice you to stay in this bountiful setting, with days spirited as you wish. Swim Surf, Shop, dine whatever you choose... and at days end, dine with friends beneath night sky. It's magnificent! Mabuhay Bohol my home sweet home!

Bohol...a slice of heaven. The waters in Alona beach is truly pristine, there were starfish even when the water is only knee- or waist-deep. There were different-colored fish, jellyfish and sea urchins in the waters near the shore. I even saw a spanish dancer (I think it's an invertebrate) really awesome! I could spend an entire day on the beach just lazing around, lying on the sand or just swimming...A walk along the beach is also nice especially at night when everything's black: the sand, the sea, except the star-filled sky...

Actually anyone complaining about the trycicles is missing the entire point, this is a part of the Philippine culture, its not an eye sore its a thing of beauty as well as a very necessary part of the economy, I for one was thankful to have tricycles available anytime I needed to get some where, I appreciate the culture, I appreciate the need for them, I appreciate the economic relief it gives thousands of people. This goes for the jeepneys as well. My favorite place to stay is the Flower Garden Resort, on Panglao near Alona beach, just a stones throw walk. As far as the beach being dirty, it was all the stray dogs that I thought needed attention. Love Bohol and wish I can get there every year...

Waste management? Algae? Tricycles? Every time I go to Bohol and Panglao Island I am impressed by the beauty of the places and the kindness of the people. And tricycles are a fact of life in places like Bohol and Panglao, as well as in Cebu, and tricycles are probably quite efficient in moving people, although in the leisurely fashion of such places. I have never noticed green algae or trash on the beaches of Panglao. In terms of having the city take tricycles off the roads... How much do you think the people who drive such things actually make each day? They have trouble supporting their families. They have to make calculations about how much maintenance to do compared with the money they make, and so on. The tricycle drivers are not there as tourist attractions, they are real people trying to provide a needed service, and get by, in difficult circumstances. If you are looking for a manufactured and prettified reality perhaps a trip to the Maldives or Disneyland is in order. I like Bohol.

The front-side of the beach is kept clean, but when you take the trouble of walking behind some of the resort, or look behind some walls, you can see the trouble with waste management.

In the Philippines, you will often see the richer people being completely unaware of the troubles of the poor. Living in comfort in their compounds or apartments in the cities, being driven around by private drivers, who bring you door-to-door, it is fairly easy to ignore the realities of life for the majority of the Filipino's, and wish them away as eye-sores and nuisances. Forgetting that they are people, no less than themselves, with lives to lives, and hopes and dreams. I know that most of those drivers earn a fairly little, once the cost of fuel and rent of the tricycle is deducted.--Jeroen

I've seen quite a number of Panglao beaches pictures, most of them are very inviting. One thing I noticed though is that in most of them I see green algae washed ashore that are seemed ignored by resorts operators. For me these debris can sag tourists' interests and excitement upon arrival. I just hope that either or both the local government of Bohol and the resorts managements would find a good way of cleaning up the shores. Also, since Bohol is gaining more and more fame when it comes to tourism, it would be a big PLUS if the local government would focus on improving the waste management both in the city and throughout the province. Solving this would help boost the tourism program. I think one good way of improving it is to provide garbage trucks to collect garbage every day/night in the entire city and provide proper disposal bins situated in crowded areas of the city, and that establishment owners should make it a habit of properly disposing their daily garbage everyday into these garbage trucks instead of dumping them right along the sidewalks... and that these should be strictly performed. Access roads are now very impressive, which give ease of travel and save time. Tricycles though can strain some of the tourists' view of the city... Now I'm not saying they should be abolished... Perhaps the local government should encourage the tricycle operators to make their vehicles in line with the tourism program since this kind of public transport is much more available than multicabs and taxis. Facades of the establishments especially along the main roads are a major turn-down. Their dull colors and lack of maintenance make the city boring and not-quite-worth-a-stroll. Well, it's really the establishment owners' discretion to either help the province's tourism industry, which is now rising, soar even higher or they simply remain nonchalant.

I agree with you that waste management is an issue that needs to be taken seriously. Too easily, people throw non-decomposable waste in places where it does not belong, and waste collection is often limited, although a few garbage collection trucks are in operation in Panglao for several years already. I have less trouble with the 'algae' you mention (which I think are typically sea-weeds or sea-grasses) that wash ashore. Just like coconuts and shells washed ashore, they are natural, and the trade-mark of a truly unspoiled beach. Of course, on the beaches frequented by visitors, they may be removed.

I have no trouble with the tricycles, and for many tourist they add to the 'colour locale'. They are a practical and relatively cheap mode of transport. I do have a problem with some of them, that use the wrong type of fuel or have insufficient maintenance on the engine, and thus cause a lot of air-pollution. These should be removed from the roads.--Jeroen.

Now that barrio fiestas all over the Island of Bohol are almost over, the bloodsheds happening in every barangays are also gradually ebbing down to negligible degrees. For vacationers who are still lingering their stay with their closest of families in Bohol now experienced sadness upon seeing small chicks tweeting from time to time looking for their mother. "Asa naman ang ahong nanay?". The battle is almost over but the bloodshed almost painted red the rivers flowing down the beautiful coastal scenery of the island. The conquestadores (bakasyonistas) shouted heavens in frolic with their loved ones in their new embrace. 'Lami gjaud kaaju ang magbaksyon, bitaw!'

And here are the victims of 'vactionation', the pigs, cattles, kabaw, kanding, chickens, and anything meaty and consumable.

Not only that, but you will see the beautiful places in my province. I never heard anyone who visited Bohol that would say that Bohol is not a good place to go. But they love to come back. Siguro something is in Bohol that draws the people back. So kita nga mga Bol anons, let's play our part to conserve our province, not only for the visitors and foreigners but for the next generations so that they can feel how blessed they are, just like what we Boholanos feel today. Kudos to the people who are working on conserving Bohol and pity to those Bol anons who don't care.

Until I discovered this site I explore a lot of God's beautiful creations under the sea and on land. Some I have seen for the first time just on this site. Yes it's so refreshing and relaxing. Me and my fiance Gary have planned to have our honeymoon in Bohol after our church wedding. And I send him a lot of pictures on this site that can be sent as a postcards too, It's a very good idea. Hello. My wife and I are going to Bohol in January with her family, all in Manila, and looking forward to it. Is it safe now? can we go travel all over, including inland? Any advice on favorite spots for views and food? Thanks

Yes, it is perfectly safe, and you'll probably have even less to worry inland than in the tourist frequented areas, as long as you don't go around flashing massive gold chains... My favourites are the coral reefs (and much can already be seen with a snorkel and goggles), the tarsier sanctuary, a trip with the whale and dolphin watching tour, and just strolling along one of the more deserted beaches.--Jeroen
