Why is it that the true silver content of 10 and 20 centavos is no where to be found after 2 hours of Google searches and wasted reading? One site says they are a mixture and and other sites just say "silver". How pure are they in the 1944, 1945 US coins?

The 1918 and 1924 greenback Philippine Peso seems to be very scarce. If there is any in e-bay, their conditions are either Fine or EF. Same with Conant One Peso greenback. Does the Central Bank of the Philippines or the Philippine Archives have few stocks of these notes? If there are few left of these notes, why can't these government agencies auction these notes to the global market (ie. ebay)? Just a thought. (P.S. same thing with the 1920 P20 Jones)
DIC wrote:

With all due respect to Boyet, I think his assessment of silver coins is greatly undervalued. I have seen his items on online auctions and they are almost double the price of his assessment here. I can't help but wonder that his assessment here is the price HE would like to purchase such coins before reselling them at his store or at ebay. I would kill to get 1911-1912 VF-EF peso coins for just P500.

I wont give my personal estimates but I would like to give some tips. It's up to the reader to decide on how to use these in determining their coin's value.

First, the rule of thumb in assessing the coin's value is never go below its intrinsic value. For instance the 1907-1912 1 peso coins have a silver content of 0.5144 ounces and for 1903-1905 it's 0.78 ounces. Silver today is trading at above $16 per ounce. So if your coin is completely faded and seemingly worthless, don't sell it below its intrinsic value. You'll make more money melting it and selling its silver.

Second, you have to consider other qualitative values of the coins. These are antiques and their value only appreciates over time simply by applying the rule on supply and demand. Consider also the mintage of the coins and it's historical value. 1910 peso is scarce 1911 & 1912 pesos are rare dates. 1903-1905 are also rare because most were melted and re-coined at 1907 in smaller sizes.

I suggest browsing through online auctions to get a feel at the current market trend for your coins. It's also a good learning opportunity because often the seller would give technical information when describing their coins such as mintage, silver content and other historical information.

I admit I am no expert and am still learning more each day but these are some of the things I've learned in my readings or through the experience of some numismatists that I know. I hope this is helpful.

Yes, this is very helpful; just to be aware of how the business works. Note that I have regularly seen eBay prices go beyond what I could buy similar items for in a shop, and that many prices advertised are just that: asking prices, not realized prices.--Jeroen.

"I have read MANY posts here of people asking what their coins are worth. Its time for some honest and straight-forward answers: Philippine coins of the Rizal (1 peso) period are virtually worthless, and can be readily found for 1p to 5p each. Coinage post WWII (1944-45) 10-20-50 centavos silver, is worth scrap silver, unless they are BU (Brilliant Uncirculated). The 1907-08-09-10 Peso current market value is around 240p, up to extra fine condition. In AU or above, there is a small (negotiable) premium. The BIG Peso coins of 1903-04-05 bring around 500-700 in EF and above. The 1911-12 peso 350-500 up to EF, and around p1000 and up in EF and up. Most post-war notes are also pretty worthless unless in UNcirculated condition. Even then, they don't bring more than a couple hundred pesos. Victory notes in EF and above command a premium. A 1 Peso Victory note in less than EF condition is worth NO more than 50 pesos. Slightly more for up to 20P. From 50 Peso up, it gets interesting. Most "collectors" aren't interested in coins OR notes that are not at Least EF in condition, UNLESS, they are very low-mintage, and/or Rare. Do NOT expect to sell your coins or notes for "Book Value". In fact (as a rule of thumb), don't expect more than 50% of True book value. Feel free to email me with any questions. I buy and sell coins and notes of ALL countries, but specialize in Philippines"

I AGREE, TESS.. For sellers of coins these are the answers to most of your questions...

Hi Boyet, thanks for the clarification. The advertising in your comment is not following the rules here, so I removed that part. Please don't forget one thing: their is nothing in old coins that gives them a value above that of their metal content, if it wasn't for collectors who appreciate them for their historic interest or attractive design. It is their desirability for collectors that gives their premium. Don't throw away "worthless" coins. Give them to children to become the core of their own collection, and thus foster an interest in numismatics. Later some of them might also be interested in the rarer, more expensive items...

Having said that there are two main things that influence price: rarity and condition. A very rare coin (such as those extremely rare First Philippine Republic one and two centavo coins) can be worth a lot even in lower qualities. More common coins in lower quality are not worth much, but may extract a premium in good quality.

Personally, I use a rather old copy of Krause 's World Coins to get an impression of a coin's rarity. This book is rather expensive, but worth the investment if you want to collect seriously. I have never bought coins in the Philippines, since asking prices in those places I've been where way beyond reasonable.

I will introduce a new rule on this forum: no more asking what a coin or note is worth from now on. If you want to discuss coins and notes, you are welcome. I encourage everybody to submit scans of their coins and notes.--Jeroen.

Collecting old coins for whatever reason is both pleasurable & worthy hobby. One example from my experience is i bought one time a P10 bill dated 1918 Harisson/Fitszimmons signatures @ the price of P100 but bought from me by a collector from Manila for ten thousand pesos.I found out later it was a rare piece & must have kept then waited for the right time to sell at the right price.

I'm a Filipina married to an American. My paternal grandfather was from Bohol. My father has a collection of old US-Philippine coins. I still remember when those coins were in circulation in my younger years. We would be delighted if Bohol has a Museum of old coins, as my husband is interested to see those. He even asked me if we can buy those old coins? Those old coins bring out historical memories.

In the Bohol Museum in Tagbilaran, you can see some American era coins, besides a large number of Bohol Provincial Emergency Notes from WWII. Outside the Philippines, your best bet in buying them is probably via ebay.--Jeroen
